City officials have suspended an employee reward program involving gift cards after questions have been raised about accountability.
Over the last four years, the Department of Watershed Management estimates that it has spent $22,000 on gift cards from places such as Red Lobster, Macy's or Home Depot. The cards were distributed to employees as reward.
Barbara Payne of the Fulton County Taxpayers Foundation questioned the expense amid rising water costs.
"These are the types of things you scale back when you don't have the money," said Payne.
Duriya Farooqui, Atlanta's chief operating officer, said that city workers went for years without raises and needed a boost.
However, sources told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that there is little record-keeping detailing who received the cards.
Farooqui said that she has suspended the program pending an auditor's complete review of expenses.
