DETROIT -- Joseph Gentz was back in court Thursday waiving his right to a preliminary exam. His case now headed to trial.
Gentz is charged with first-degree murder for the January strangulation of Jane Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park wife and mother found in her Mercedes SUV abandoned on Detroit's east side.
Gentz is also charged with conspiracy. He's told police Jane's husband, Bob Bashara, promised him $2,000 and an old Cadillac to kill his wife, but Bob Bashara has not yet been charged with murdering Jane.
"We're still reviewing the evidence, but strategically there was no need to hold a preliminary examination," said Susan Reed, Gentz's attorney.
She admitted it would have been unusual to proceed with testimony when the alleged co-conspirator has yet to be charged. Plus, there is still the possibility of a plea deal for Gentz.
"Have you spoken at all with regards to a plea deal?" we asked Reed.
"Not at this time. We're still looking at evidence and new evidence is still coming in," she answered.
Reed is not allowed to share any of that evidence, citing a gag order from the court.
Gentz remains behind bars in isolation. His attorney said that is for his own safety.
"No one enjoys being in isolation, but I think he's handling this as well as you can expect."
It's for his own protection from the very man who he says hired him to kill Jane Bashara. Bob Bashara is locked up for allegedly trying to hire a hit man to have Gentz killed in jail. Bashara will stand trial for solicitation to commit murder in November.
