A memorial service was held Thursday for a soldier from central New York who died in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel T. Metcalfe, 29, of Liverpool, died September 29, 2012, in Sayyid Abad when enemy forces attacked his unit while on foot patrol, the Pentagon and his father said.

He was the 2,000th member of the U.S. military killed in the Afghanistan war, the AP reported.

Metcalfe was married with three children, according to the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on October 9 in Metcalfe's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sgt. 1st Class Metcalfe," Cuomo said. "We will honor this soldier's service and be grateful for his dedication to our country."

Metcalfe was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy, where he lived with his family.

He went to high school for a few years in Penfield, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester. More than 100 people attended a memorial service there on Thursday, the AP reported.

Metcalfe will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
