Overnight Snap Polls Say Romney Won Debate

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

We may be waking up to a changed presidential race Thursday morning.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney faced each other Wednesday night in their first presidential debate.

Some snap polls overnight say Romney won this debate. At the very least, he may have made this race much more competitive.

You can argue that just by walking out on the stage Romney got a boost, appearing alongside the president. But while they warmly shook hands, Romney was on the offensive.

Despite the build-up, this was not the night full of zingers that many pundits had anticipated. Instead, it was a drill-down on a number of weighty domestic issues, including the overall economy and healthcare, which Romney called "Obamacare."

While the president embraced the term, he shot back, accusing Romney of making promises about health care and tax policy without providing specifics.

For all of the substance Wednesday night, social networking sites seemed to pick up on one Romney line in particular.

"I'm sorry, Jim," he told moderator Jim Lehrer. "I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I'm going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually like you, too. But I'm not going to – I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for."

We may not have learned anything new last night from either of these candidates, but even some Democrats concede that Romney, who has been behind in so many polls, may get a boost now. The question is will it last?
