Inspection finds LIRR crews waste time, money

A review by the Inspector General of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, due out Thursday, reportedly shows "systemic" inefficiency among the workers responsible for the day-to-day upkeep of the commuter line.

The findings include a sluggish work ethic rampant and a lack of oversight throughout the unit, according to the Wall Street Journal.

LIRR officials have not refuted the findings, the WSJ added.

The investigation involved taking a close look at small-scale projects including the replacement of a platform staircase at the Great Neck Station last year. The job was over-budget and took twice as long to finish, according to the review.

Crews were found to leave early from the work site.

The LIRR responded to the report by ordering an overhaul in management protocol by LIRR officials.

LIRR President Helena Williams said in a statement "We expect our employees to put in a full day of work for a full day's pay. Anything less is unacceptable"
