Voter apathy and the 2012 election

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Voter apathy.  It's out there.  Some of it is people just don't get around to it.  They get distracted, they're busy, they're not following the news.  And sometimes, people who keep up on things get tired of all the political infighting in Washington.

If you are not energized this election season, if you aren't really looking forward to voting and the endless campaign is getting on your nerves -- you're not alone.

Are a lot of people so turned off that they are not voting or taking part?

M.J. Mann of Tempe says, "Yes, I have heard some of my friends say that...they would rather do nothing than do the wrong thing."

So what is your take -- it seems there is a lot of arguing.  Are you getting tired of it?

Bob Arrowsmith of Tempe says, "Very tired of it.  I would like to see one party cooperate with the President and do something for us who want to get jobs."

So why is it a lot of people who could don't vote?  Some people do not get around to registering and some just get turned off by all the noise, all the arguing, all the discussion.

"I think we have done a pretty good job to make it as convenient as possible," said Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett.

Why?  About one out of four don't participate.

"I do not know, you would have to ask them individually," said Bennett.

The funny thing is, it couldn't be easier.  Signing up takes a few minutes.  We saw a group at Arizona State University called Voto Latino helping people get involved, making the process easy.

Some new voters got the message.

"It is not really an interesting topic, but I thought about it and like, if you pick the wrong President, that is on you, you know what I mean?" said Jobana Robles of Phoenix.

Maybe that's the best way to look at it.  If you don't vote, it's on you.

Some dates to remember:

Oct. 9: Deadline to register to vote
Oct. 11: Early voting for the general election begins
Nov. 6: Election day

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
