DETROIT -- Wilbur Lofton heard shots out in front of his home on Euclid at the northbound Lodge service drive. He then heard a car speed around the block, down the alley behind his home and more shots.

"I looked out the back door. I saw this man laying on the ground," said Lofton.

It was around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Loftons called the police.

They have lived in the neighborhood since 1968. The home next door has been abandoned for a dozen years. It has been stripped, and a couple of months ago they found a body dead and rotting inside. Now a young man has been shot and killed running through that backyard.

He is part of a disturbingly high number of homicides in the City of Detroit. As of September 23, the police department put that number at 287, but there are those who say it is higher, more like 315.

The victim did have a Wayne County Community College identification card on him. He was shot several times and estimated to be in his early twenties.
