It's the hormone that can effect you from head to toe, testosterone. Low testosterone can cause fatigue, bone loss and even hot flashes. Mike Moyad a Doctor from the Michigan Institute of Urology says "Men do need testosterone and I can tell you, fatigue is a real problem, even men get hot flashes when their testosterone gets too low, just like women do. The drop off is much more gradual, it's about 1-2 percent a year after the age of 35 or 40 but very gradually, not quickly like you see in women going through menopause."
The reality is, this hormone is linked to sexual desire and a whole lot more- healthy bones, muscle mass even memory. If it is a little low- there are things you can start doing right now to give it a boost.
"People need to realize how testosterone levels are tied into your lifestyle." Says Urologist Dr. Michael Lutz. Lifting weights is one of the ways to naturally boost testosterone. Dr. Moyad focuses on preventive medicine and says there are other ways men can take control "There's so much you can do...lose a little bit of weight, become aerobically active-30 minutes a day, with runners we're seeing higher testosterone levels as they lose weight. With sleep, we just found out last year, If you're deprived of sleep five hours or less a night your testosterone can drop as much as 10 or 15%."
A blood test will determine if you're testosterone is low and this will be one of the screenings happening at the Michigan Institute of Urology's 2nd annual men's health event this Saturday.
Its a free event that's meant to give men a chance to meet with doctors and learn how to make a difference.
Screenings will consist of a PSA, testosterone, glucose and cholesterol just to name a few. We are also offering free dental and oral examination screenings by University of Detroit School of Dentistry, free vision testing and counseling will be available for depression screening. We'll see you Saturday at the 2nd annual men's health event at Ford Field.
