Barbara Crowley called Fox 5 in a panic. Her son is getting married in just 11 days. She ordered a dress from Me Me and Michelina's Bridal and Formalwear shop in Larchmont, N.Y.
Back in late August, she got worried because she heard rumors the store was going out of business.
Week after week, her dress didn't arrive. Barbara had paid $600 in cash in full for the dress. She says that last week the owner, Margaret Pasquino, told her again not to worry and that her dress would be here Tuesday.
But the lights were off and the door was locked Tuesday. Crowley said she called and left messages for the owner but did not hear back.
While Fox was at the store, FedEx tried to redeliver a package to the store that it had tried to deliver last Friday. The package was "cash of delivery." The FedEx delivery person said the owner didn't have the money on Friday and told him to come back Tuesday.
Last week, the owner told Fox 5 she was going out of business because of personal problems and that she will make sure every customer gets the dresses they ordered and paid for.
In Barbara's case that didn't happen.
So, Fox 5 called Jovani Fashions in Manhattan, the manufacturer of Barbara's dress. The owner said he is going to give Barbara the dress she ordered even though Me Me's never paid him for it
Two other couples also came by and told me they ordered their dresses in mid- to late august and that the owner encouraged them to pay in cash in full because if they did, they wouldn't have to pay the tax.
We tried to reach the owner, but the store is closed and she did not return our calls.
