Delco Residents Fight To Keep Open Wildlife Green Space

Posted: Updated:

"We're going to lose all this beautiful area," said Michael Caroselli. He is one of many farmers worried he and his horses are getting pushed out of peaceful open space they call home.

"A lot of farmers lease farms and fields, store hay, use trails and bike here," said Caroselli.

Developer Woodlawn Trustees owns most of the land surrounding Beaver Valley Road in Concord Township. Now, the trustees want about 318 acres of it currently zoned as a wildlife refuge rezoned for commercial and residential development.

John Gray is concerned about how close the proposed development would be to his home.

"There's deer every day in the backyard and now I'm going to have parking spots 85 feet from my back door," he said. Gray also has safety concerns about a proposed big box store that could go up behind him.

"Someone could just run across that 50 feet of grass and grab my kids and be in Delaware in a minute," said Gray.

Tuesday an attorney for Woodlawn Trustees presented plans before the Township Board of Supervisors and a packed room of residents. It includes retail, residential and a senior community.

Attorney Marc Kaplin told the crowd, "We would be glad to meet with you. We would be glad to get the plans out and we would try to answer any problems."

Still, Chris Markland fears the long term effects and said, "I'm worried the value of my home is going to decrease greatly particularly as I get closer to retirement years."

The Township Board of Supervisors said this is the first of many public hearings on the issue.
