Man charged in cutting off puppy's ears

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - An Amarillo man has been charged with felony animal cruelty after allegedly cutting off a puppy's ears and trying to sew them back on.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that witnesses told police they heard the puppy whimpering in the trunk of 30-year-old Juan Chavira's vehicle in Lubbock. Police found the white pit bull puppy covered in blood.

Lubbock Animal Services took the dog and said Monday that "Major" was in good spirits in special protection at the shelter. Chavira's case was scheduled to go to a grand jury Oct. 9. No phone number was immediately available for Chavira and it was not known if he had a lawyer.
