A flood warning remains in effect for Gwinnett and Rockdale counties after hours of heavy rain soaked North Georgia on Monday, causing problems in several neighborhoods in the metro area.
A tree fell into a house on Altacrest Drive in Scottdale. Fortunately, no one was hurt. No one was injured when a tree crashed on top of a car on Charles Allen Drive near Eighth Street in midtown. In Johns Creek, Wilson Road was closed throughout the night as crews worked to replace a telephone pole after a tree knocked it over.
Frustrated residents in Peoplestown had the chance to talk to Mayor Kasim Reed about the problems they see every time there's a hard rain. Back in July, city leaders toured the area after residents complained that rising waters contained raw sewage.The city began cleaning out storm drains on a regular basis.
"Cleaning out drains is not going to fix an issue where you have six feet of sewage in the back yard," said a resident at the time.
Mayor Reed met with many of those same residents with an update on Monday night, saying they've repaired manholes and are continuing to sweep streets and clean storm drains.
"What is being done around our neighborhood is really superficial," said a resident.
Reed says if what they're doing doesn't work, they're considering a bigger more expensive solution -- building a retention pond.
"I'm going to leave this office with this problem solved, even if it means spending $25 to $35 million to solve it," said Reed.
Residents say they want the problem fixed immediately, but they're pleased that at least something is being done.
The Gainesville area received over 7 inches of rain since Sunday. After noon on Tuesday, rising waters in Suwanee submerged a portion of Martins Farm Road near Satellite Boulevard. Emergency crews have blocked off the road.
