Legislation would allow quick weddings in New Jersey

Love birds could soon get a Vegas-style quickie wedding in Atlantic City if lawmakers in New Jersey get their way.
The Senate budget panel approved legislation that would eliminate the state's 72-hour waiting period for the issuance of a marriage or civil union license. The bill now goes to the full Senate for a vote.
"New Jersey's coastal location makes it among the most sought after destinations in the country for wedding," said state Sen. Nicholas Scutari, a Democrat. "By modernizing the process of filing for a license, we will make our state even more attractive to out-of-state consumers. Ultimately, this will help to create jobs and to boost our local economies."
Scutari said that the waiting period is cumbersome for out-of-state residents who are planning weddings at New Jersey's tourism destinations.
If passed, the bill would let couples get a marriage license upon applying for one.
It would also let New Jerseyans apply for a license in the municipality where the ceremony is being held. Under current law, you must apply either where you or your partner lives.
Scutari said that eliminating the waiting period would make New Jersey competitive with neighboring states: Pennsylvania has a 72-hour waiting period and New York and Delaware make you wait 24 hours.
The Legislature approved the bill in the last session, but Gov. Chris Christie did not act on it.
