Suspect declared competent for Tucson bombing trial

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A woman accused in the car-bombing death of her ex-husband in Tucson nearly 16 years ago has been ruled competent to stand trial.

Pamela Phillips is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the November 1996 death of Tucson businessman Gary Triano.

The 55-year-old Phillips is accused of using portions of Triano's $2 million life insurance policy to pay ex-boyfriend Ronald Young to kill Triano.

Young was convicted in 2010 and sentenced to two life prison sentences.

Phillips was declared incompetent to stand trial last December. She has spent the last 10 months in a jail restoration-to-competency program.

Phillips' attorneys on Monday told the Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/Sw1c7m) they may challenge the competency finding after having their own independent doctors look over Phillips' existing psychological reports.
