A woman from Mamaroneck village in Westchester County, N.Y., is charged in the death of her four-year-old son.
Responding to a 911 call, cops found Manuela Maria Morgado, in a semiconscious state, and her son's body in the bedroom of her home on E. Boston Post Road on Monday.
A person in law enforcement told The Associated Press that Morgado had taken some pills in a failed suicide attempt immediately after the boy's death. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details had not been made public.
A family member of Morgado's made the 911 call and let cops into the home.
Morgado, 46, reportedly asphyxiated her son, Jason Reish, according to LoHud.com.
She reportedly was involved in a heated custody dispute with the boy's father and left a suicide note at the scene.
A lawyer for Dr. Reish issued a statement on Wednesday saying: "We would most respectfully request that the media respect the privacy of Dr. Reish and his family during this time of mourning. The events which led to the untimely death of our beloved Jake are both incomprehensible and unimaginable. We will never be able to comprehend the heinous actions of Jake's Mother. We leave this matter in the capable hands of the authorities to secure justice for Jake and our family."
Morgado was arraigned in Mamaroneck Village Court on a second-degree murder charge after being evaluated at a hospital. She was remanded to the Westchester County jail without bail.
