The Atlanta City Council put the brakes on a proposed Walmart superstore in Buckhead on Monday. A comprehensive 15-acre mixed-use project failed by one vote.
Atlanta Developer Jeff Fuqua wanted to transform 15 acres of land near Lindberg Drive and Piedmont Road into a mixed-use development. The project would have provided 600 jobs and included a Super Walmart, smaller retail stores, two residential buildings and a three-acre park.
Tom Shepherd, President of the Garden Hills Civic Association, said they don't need any more commercial space, but what they need is more residential space.
"They're been trying to get us to bite into this idea that we're anti-Walmart. This has nothing to do with Walmart. This has to do with a big box store -- we don't need any more commercial space. If you take a look, there is plenty of commercial space out there. The idea is they put in a seven-acre parking lot where residential sits right now. We need more residential," said Shepherd.
The measure failed by one vote in the Atlanta City Council.
Fuqua said that he is not giving up on the proposal.
"I am disappointed, but we still got a majority and it's not over yet," said Fuqua.
Fuqua said that he may amend the proposal and bring it before the council again.
