Police say a 4-year-old  died after falling out of an apartment window in the Bronx Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at 3:43 p.m. at 280 East 161st Street in the Melrose section of the borough.

The boy, identified as Gabriel Estevez, was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police had the area around the building taped off because as they were trying to figure out exactly how Gabriel fell out of the fourth story window.

The scene where a little boy fell to his death was too much to bear for his friends and family.

Frank White, a neighbor, was across the street when he heard Gabriel's screams around 4:00 p.m.

There were no window guards on the apartment window.

As investigators remained on the scene into the night on 161st street, a makeshift memorial in front of the building for the boy known for his smile continued to grow.

Meantime mourners are also asking -- who was supposed to be watching Gabriel? Why weren't there any window guards?

It's these questions and more that many people hope will be answered.

So far, no one has been charged with a crime and the case remains ongoing.
