The U.S. Coast Guard is overseeing the cleanup of 1,100 gallons of a petroleum-cement mixture from a Brooklyn waterway.

Oil spill contractors working for National Grid Corporation, under the direction of the Coast Guard and the Dept. of Environmental Conservation are working to clean up a spill of oil that started early Friday when the utility National Grid was cementing a pipe in the Paerdegat Basin, a channel connected to Jamaica Bay.

The Office of Emergency Management says contractors working for National Grid under the Coast Guard's direction are working to clean the spill.

The public is advised to avoid fishing and recreational activity in this area until further notice. Officials say an odor may also be present in the area.

There is no danger of an explosion.

It once was an accepted tactic as old as policing itself and, according to the NYPD, a key to the city's dramatic drop in crime: patrol officers stopping young men on the street to see if they're up to no good.
