Family could use help fixing up Detroit house after teen shot

Kavon Coleman struggles to walk and even has trouble sleeping after being shot. We've since learned he and his mother were saving to fix up a house, but now they're both out of work.

Coleman said he was shot for his Air Jordan Retro basketball shoes. He paid $410 for the shoes, stepped off a bus in northwest Detroit, and was shot by a man several times. The gunman escaped.

Korrene Adams is Kavon's mother. She was working and bought a three bedroom house in Detroit one month before her son was shot. Kavon was working at Subway inside Henry Ford Hospital. They were paying bills and planned to fix up the new home.

They got a deal on the house because while it was vacant, scrappers stripped it clean. The bank sold it cheap to Korrene, but then Kavon was shot. He can't work and Korrene has to help care for Kavon, so her employer informed her that they could not hold her job. That means both Korrene and Kavon are out of work while he recovers.

Kavon has two brothers and a sister, so the family of five now all moved in with a relative's family, but it simply is too crowded.

Korrene has a nice home, but it has been stripped. She would love to move her family there if she can replace the stolen items. However, it's bleak in the basement. The furnace, hot water tank and copper piping are all gone.

Korrene said she is down, but not out, and her family is still thankful.

"Just the fact that my (son's) life was spared is what is making me hold on."

It won't be easy. It will take work, appliances and labor. They never bought any beds, and now they're starting from scratch.

"By me having to be there with him 24/7, it's like my funds (are) dry, and he's like, 'Mom, I wish I could help you. I wish I could help you more.'"
