NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -

A New Fairfield man fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defense during what appeared to be an attempted burglary and then discovered the youth was his son, Connecticut State Police said.

Tyler Giuliano, 15, was killed outside a neighbor's home on Meetinghouse Hill Circle at about 1 a.m. Thursday, troopers said.

A woman in the home believed someone was breaking in and called the teen's father, who lived next door, police said. The father grabbed a gun and went to investigate.

The father confronted the teen, who was wearing a ski mask and black clothing, troopers said, and the father fired his gun when the teen came at him with a weapon.

The father, Jeffrey Giuliano, is a fifth-grade teacher in town.

Police are investigating. No charges have been filed.

A message seeking comment was left for Giuliano.
