NEW YORK (AP) - The NAACP has filed a complaint charging an admissions test given at eight elite New York City high schools discriminates against blacks and Latinos.
The complaint was filed with the U.S. Department of Education, which said it was reviewing it.
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is the only exam used to admit students to the eight schools.
According to the Daily News (http://nydn.us/Rkmfga ), the NAACP claims the exam is unfair to black and Latino students because they are denied admission "at rates far higher than other racial groups." The organization didn't specify how the test discriminated. But NAACP attorney Rachel Kleinman said blacks and Latinos may lack tutoring and other resources.
City officials disputed the allegations, saying the test is color blind.
