Israeli officials confirmed Tuesday that a cease-fire deal between Hamas and Israel was reached to end the seven-week Gaza war, which has killed over 2,200 people. Hamas officials said the deal calls for an "open-ended" cease-fire, and an Israeli agreement to ease its blockade of Gaza to allow relief supplies and construction materials into the war-battered territory.

British diplomats in Washington are apologizing for Twitter posts that made light of the 200th anniversary of their troops torching the White House in the War of 1812.  The apologies were prompted after the British Embassy posted a picture Sunday of Patrick Davis, deputy British ambassador to the United States, with a caption saying he was participating in "the anniversary of burning of the White House with a BBQ.”

The number of doctor-assisted suicide cases reported in the Netherlands grew by 559 between the years of 2010 and 2011, a commission says.

Euthanasia was decriminalized in the Netherlands in 2002 for patients who are terminally ill, in great pain, and ask to die.

The Euthanasia Commission, set up by the government, found that doctor-reported cases made up about 2.7 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands in 2011, from 2.3 percent in 2010.

Nicole Visee, the secretary general of the commission, said Wednesday her organization investigates whether doctors followed the law, and she could only speculate about possible reasons for the increase. They might include better reporting by doctors; more deaths from terminal illness, as a result of an aging population; and changes in ethical views.

New York City women are tired of hearing vile things yelled at them as they walk down the street. Many women are going public about street harassment and catcalling. Some even post picture of their offenders on social media. Founded in 2005, Hollaback! is an anti-harassment organization giving women a platform to do just that.

Homeless people still sleep under the Manhattan Bridge, but others who used to camp out near its base have been displaced by police and are now calling Park Avenue South home. Park Avenue South sits in one of the trendiest parts of Manhattan, with businesses, restaurants, hotels, and swank lofts. It's also the street corner home base of Tommy Lanfranchi and his domestic partner Nicole Kilroy, who've been in a methadone program for 10 years.
