Lakeville trailer park sprayed with bullets, none injured

LAKEVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Residents in one Lakeville neighborhood are shaken after their homes were sprayed with gunfire from the nearby street over the weekend, leaving bullet holes in bedroom walls.

Police say it seems someone randomly opened fire with a handgun sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning. Fortunately, no one was hurt but there were some near misses.

One foot in one direction or the other, this story could be about fatalities instead.

"I had no clue that it was a bullet," said Dan Weltzin, who still can't believe his luck.

A bullet hole can be seen just above his bed, where he had been sleeping when someone unloaded rounds into the neighborhood on the Lakeville-Farmington line.

"I would bet it's a foot or so," he said. "Pretty close."

Weltzin's head had been on his pillow when the bullet tore through his bedroom wall, and he didn't understand what happened at first.

"I heard this snapping noise," he recalled. "It woke me up out of a dead sleep."

Soon, he discovered he was one of several residents in the Country View Mobile Home Park who found bullets lodged in their vehicles and homes.

"I was just like, how did that happen?" he said.

Investigators believe the shootings were random and did not target neighborhood residents. Shell casings were found along nearby Pilot Knob Road, and detectives aren't sure whether the rounds were fired as someone drove past or if the shooter was on foot.

"The bullets traveled across the street, had enough power to go through steel," Weltzin said.

The residents told FOX 9 News they figure it was probably a drunken prank, but they say it was way too close for comfort.

"Someone could have been killed very easily," said resident Mike Halbmaier.

It's estimated that about 8 to 10 rounds were fired into the park, but there are no eyewitness accounts at this point. Anyone with information is asked to call Lakeville police.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
