Centrowitz, Martinez win NYRR 5th Avenue Mile

Olympian Matthew Centrowitz beat 2011 champion Bernard Lagat to win the professional men's race at the New York Road Runners 5th Avenue Mile, Saturday, September 22, 2012.

He finished in 3:52.4. Lagat finished in 3:52.9. Leonel Manzano crossed in 3:53.1.

Brenda Martinez won the women's pro race in 4:24.2. Anna Pierce followed second in 4:24.9 and Hannah England sprinted to a third-place finish in 4:26.0.

Defending champion Jenny Simpson, who led early, faded to a 10th-place finish in 4:29.9.

The annual race down Fifth Avenue from about 80th Street to 60th Street featured dozens of open heats based on age groups; 2,655 men and 2,814 women finished, according to NYRR.

The event also included the men's and women's NYRR Road Mile Championships, which are invitational races for local elite members of the New York Road Runners.
