DETROIT (WJBK) -

Several local boxers with the Downtown Boxing Team Youth Program will be heading to a big national competition in Toledo in brand new uniforms.

We told you last month about the $3,500 dollars that was raised to buy uniforms, and how Adriana Pavon was paid to provide uniforms six months ago, but never delivered on her promise. Instead, Fox 2 viewers did.

"I have my competition shirts now, and I don't have to fight in my same gym shirts that I wear every day," said Levan Johnson.

"I think this is like basically a dream come true," said David Davis.

"To see the way the community came together, that's the key thing," said Coach Khali. "The suburbs and the inner city working together for a common cause and a good cause at that, so it made me real proud."

So many viewers saw our story last month and the rag tag outfits the kids were forced to fight in. They just didn't look like the champions they are, so our viewers responded and sent in donations to help.

"It's all about helping these kids, and if you see the faces, it's like Christmas," said Sherman Taylor from Taylor Special Services.

"It was really great. We're happy to help," said Fotoula Lambros from Workroom Detroit.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and the Carpenter's Council even donated $5,000 for new equipment.

"I'm very happy to have been a part of this and to be doing something to help young people who are trying to stay straight," said Napoleon.

They're already training hard. Now they will be looking good, too, and they said they're ready to win at nationals.

"We appreciate anything they did for us. We're going to go fight hard and win for them, too," said Anthony Flagg, Junior.

"Since I got the uniform, I'm going to try to make them proud," Johnson said.
