Inmate seriously hurt in fall at NJ prison

Posted: Updated:

UNION, N.J. (AP) - Officials say an inmate has suffered serious injuries after she apparently fell onto a concrete area inside the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County.

Department of Corrections spokesman Matthew Schuman tells The Star-Ledger that the inmate was found around 8:20 p.m. Sunday. She was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately known how the woman was hurt. Schuman says she "apparently fell."

The inmate, who was not identified, is 1 of 63 inmates housed in a maximum security unit inside the prison complex. Schuman says Edna Mahan, the state's only women's prison, has about 750 inmates.
