Candidate Bio: Brad Schneider - 10th District

Posted: Updated:

Brad Schneider is running to represent Illinois' 10th congressional district in U.S. Congress, where the Democrat has lived for more than 20 years.

Schneider is a small business owner, who strives to help family-owned businesses to thrive in the present economy. He believes in compromise to reach a goal, strong leadership and bold action in Congress to get things done.

He hopes to bring private sector expertise to Washington to help create jobs and build an infrastructure that would give future generations the opportunity to pursue their goals without fearing the state of the economy.

Schneider is running against Republican Rep. Robert Dold, who has represented the district since January 2011.

Illinois' 10th district covers Chicago's northeast suburbs in parts of Cook County and Lake County, including Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Grayslake, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, North Chicago, Northbrook, Prospect Heights, Vernon Hills, Waukegan, Wheeling, and Zion.

On The Issues

Americans with Disabilities - America was the first country in the world to declare equality for citizens with disabilities. Our nation values the positive contributions of everyone; and, among us, there are 54 million people in the United States with disabilities. Through generations, they have improved our country in immeasurable ways. Since the passage of the momentous Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), many disabled Americans have experienced increased access and opportunity in our communities. Despite these advancements, there is still much work to be done. In Congress, I will stand up for the rights of Americans with disabilities and work to end all forms of discrimination. Read more...

Education - To enjoy long-term prosperity and security, we must provide world-class schools for all our young people. Education must be our priority if we are to compete in the 21st Century global economy. If China and India educate only 10% of their kids well, they will educate more kids well than we have kids to educate at all. Our children must be afforded each and every opportunity to succeed. Read more...

Energy Security - Our national leaders have been talking about energy independence for more than forty years, with far too little progress to account for it. We remain almost wholly dependent on fossil fuels and wholly over-dependent on imported oil, continuing to purchase oil from countries that wish to do us harm. America's long-term prosperity and security – our environment, our economy, our global competitiveness and influence – require that we pursue a comprehensive energy strategy and reduce our dependence on imported energy. Read more...

Environment - Ensuring our children's future requires that we be responsible, strategic stewards of our environment, our ecology, and our natural resources. Doing so will enrich the lives, and livelihoods, of all Americans. Contrary to the ideological rhetoric of the Tea Party Republicans, responsible stewardship of our resources will promote economic growth, create jobs, and preserve our global leadership in industries such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and transportation. Read more...

Fiscal Reform - Our national debt continues to spiral out of control, and Congress has been fueling the fire. People in Washington could take a lesson from our small businesses and working families, who have been doing more with less for years now. For virtually my entire career, I've worked with small businesses; I've helped family-owned companies grow. I will bring the same common-sense approach to Congress that facilitated the growth of my own business. Read more...

Gun Control - Cases of senseless gun violence happen every single day across America, tragically affecting our communities, our schools, even our children in their own homes. I believe we must work together to enact safe, sensible gun policy that will help reduce gun violence in this country, while preserving our constitutional right to bear arms. Read more...

Health Care - In Congress, I will work to bring intelligent, workable solutions to our nation's healthcare system. We must work towards three long-term goals: (1) offering more people the ability to receive quality, affordable medical care throughout their lives; (2) consistently improving the outcomes of our health care system as measured by healthier, longer lives; and (3) consistently reducing the average per person cost of health care without compromising on quality or access. Immigration Reform - Rather than working to secure the border or fix our broken immigration system, this Tea Party Congress continues to play politics and kick the can down the road. We need comprehensive immigration reform because the federal government has failed to do its job. Our border must be secured in a way that promotes the practice of legal immigration. A strong border is necessary for any reform package to be effective. Read more...

Jobs and the Economy - For too long, our economic recovery has been hindered by partisan bickering. Middle-class families in Illinois and across the country have been suffering while the politicians in Washington have been fighting old battles over contraception and the EPA. It's time Congress started working for working families again. Read more...

LGBT Equality - If elected to Congress, I will be a strong advocate for the wide-ranging issues facing the LGBT community across the country. All Americans are entitled to equal treatment and recognition under the law. All Americans, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. As Americans, we are all equal. Anything otherwise is simply wrong. Read more...

National Security and Foreign Policy - As a Member of Congress, I will support policies that preserve the United States's positive influence and leadership in bilateral and multilateral relations with our allies, in addressing challenges with our adversaries, and in setting international policies in global forums. Our goal in foreign policy must always be to keep America safe today, as well as work to craft a sustainable, forward-looking policy that can ensure our security and prosperity for years to come. Peace and Security for Israel - Here in the Tenth District, Israel is more than a foreign policy issue. Every year large numbers of our neighbors and friends, children, students, and young adults visit Israel. Many of us have family, friends and co-workers in Israel. Peace and security for Israel and her neighbors is not just politics, it's personal. I will be a leading voice in Congress ensuring that the US-Israel relationship remains strong, steadfast, and secure. Read more...

Rebuilding our Middle Class - The promise of America is that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can get ahead. But today that promise is at risk. We're not investing enough in education and innovation, and we continue to give tax breaks to those who need them least, at the expense of the middle class. Read more...

Social Security and Medicare - In this country, we must take care of the generations that came before us, that worked every day to raise us up to where we are today. I'm proud to be part of a compassionate society that won't turn its back on its citizens when they need it most. But our social safety nets are under attack from Congressional Republicans who want to privatize or gut these important programs. The protective strategies that have become woven into our national identity – like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid– are too important for us to turn our backs on them. Read more...

Veterans and Military Families - Military service is one of the greatest honors a citizen can perform for his country. We owe it to our service men and women to treat them with the same dignity, respect, and sense of responsibility that they have already shown to us and our country. When our veterans return home, there must be full spectrum of programs and support systems in place. Read more...

Women's Rights - I believe in a woman's fundamental right to make her own decisions about her body and her health, free from intrusion by the government. We must diligently protect women's access to comprehensive health care, including family planning, birth control, and safe, legal abortion. As a member of Congress, I will oppose any legislation that limits women's access to full and comprehensive health care. I will also oppose any legislation that seeks to place limits on the full spectrum of health decisions between a woman and her doctor. Read more...
