The Citizens Budget Commission released a new and free online map allows New Yorkers to compare how school districts spend their money per student.

The CBC released the interactive map for its website last week and it will allow viewers to search for a school district, see breakdowns in how it spends its budget and how it compares to state averages per pupil.

The State of New York school districts spend nearly twice the national average but there are huge differences in per-pupil spending between districts in urban and rural areas compared to wealthier suburban districts.

The map shows that statewide schools spend nearly three times the national average for fringe benefits for employees including pensions and health care.

The CBC is a nonprofit, civic organization that attempts to influence constructive change in the finances and services of New York City and New York State government.
