Police arrested a homeless man and registered sex-offender for a rape that occurred in Hudson River Park early Saturday morning.
According to police, the victim was sitting on a park bench near the waterside of West Street and Harrison Place by Pier 25. The victim said she waiting to watch the sun rise when the suspect, 25-year-old Jonathan Stewart, sat beside her and attempted to engage her in a conversation around 5:15 a.m.
Police say Stewart then struck the 21-year-old victim in the face, allegedly her 10 feet into the bushes in, attempted to strangle her and was sexually assaulted. The victim was able to escape and Stewart ran from the scene.
The victim ran completely naked towards two Parks Department officers and informed them of the assault. One officer covered the victim with a blanket while the other officer chased after the suspect.
The Parks Department officers broadcast a description of Stewart. Stewart jumped over a fence into a playground and ran into construction area. NYPD officers later found Stewart hiding in bushes in a nearby median.
The New York Post said the victim's belongings - including a smartphone, purse, beige wedge heels, undergarments and an orange cellphone case - were found strewn along the waterfront.
The victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital and is listed in stable condition. The victim told police she lives nearby area and was having personal problems. According to the Post she told authorities she went to the park to clear her head.
Stewart faces several charges including Rape in the 1st degree.
According to the Post, Stewart has a record of vicious crimes. He was paroled in July after serving seven years in state prison on a robbery and sex-abuse conviction from 2004.
