FOREST LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) -

One Forest Lake neighborhood has seen nearly a dozen cases of identity theft, and police held a meeting on Thursday to get the victims together so they could compare notes and figure out their next move.

"I knew that my neighbors had been hit," Heather Boylan told FOX 9 News. "Then, two weeks later, I got a letter from one of the credit card companies in the mail."

Last week, the Forest Lake Police Department used its Code Red system to alert residents in the Summerfield subdivision that there had been a string of identity thefts in the area affecting 10 women for a combined loss of nearly $100,000.

So far, female residents living on Everten Trail Circle have been struck -- with dozens of fraudulent credit cards open in their names. One card that was delivered already maxed out even had a picture of a woman believed to be a suspect posing for the Sam's Club account.

Residents gathered at the Harwood Creek Library to hear detectives discuss the thefts and give tips for security protection. Resources were also made available to the victims, whose information is believed to have been electronically compromised. So far, the mail and open wifi have been ruled out as sources for the theft.

Those living near Fenway Avenue and the airport are encouraged to check their credit report to ensure their identity has not been compromised while police work with the FBI on their theories about the close proximity of the victims.

The first report of fraud popped up two weeks ago, but more eight victims would come forward within the next week. Since late August, the spending sprees have popped up in Illinois, Louisiana and Texas.

According to police, the thief has likely stopped and only used the stolen information on purchases within the United States, which leaves a possibility for recovering the funds.
