Shake Shack big enough for calorie counts

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- An upscale burger chain that started with one Manhattan eatery has gotten big enough that it's required to post calorie counts.

Restaurateur Danny Meyer opened his 15th Shake Shack last week in New Haven, Conn. That means the menu at each New York City outlet must now include calorie information.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a meal consisting of a double-patty ShackBurger, regular fries and a chocolate shake is just shy of 2,000 calories. That's what the U.S. Agriculture Department recommends the average adult consume in an entire day.

Shake Shack CEO Randy Garutti said his company is happy to post the data.

He said that after a little more than a week with calorie counts, Shake Shack customers are sticking with what they usually eat and drink.
