Bill would require signs at gas stations for credit prices

The New York City Council is considering a bill that would require gas stations to post signs with prices for cash, credit card and debit card purchases.

Many gas stations charge several cents more per gallon of gasoline for credit card and debit card purchases.

"As a (local) government, we cannot force gas stations to charge the same (as cash) price," NYC City Council Speaker Christine Quinn told Good Day New York on Thursday.

Issues related to the setting of gasoline prices fall within the jurisdiction of federal authorities, added Quinn.

New Yorkers pay an average of 20 cents more to fill their cars than the rest of the country.

With gas prices skimming the $5 mark Quinn, council members and a representative from the AAA reminded New Yorkers at a news conference Thursday about ways they can ensure they're paying the lowest price possible:

  • Ask if there is a cash discount
  • Plan ahead; visit gas price comparison websites such as the Gas Prices map at MyFoxNY.com
  • Make sure prices match what you're charged (check receipt)
  • Price gouging is against the law; ask the attendant if the station has raised its prices more than once that day. If so, contact 311 to file a complaint
  • Get a receipt
