Crews for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority broke through the last piece of rock separating Queens and Manhattan Thursday for the new East River tunnel.

The tunnel will carry Long Island Rail Road trains to and from Grand Central Terminal.

People who live on Long Island will no longer need to travel into Penn Station to get to the East Side of Manhattan.

Huge machines 85 feet below Northern Boulevard in Queens chipped away at the last few inches of rock during the historical moment at about 9:30 a.m.

The East River tunnel will be the first to Manhattan since the F train in 1989 and only the second since 1950.
