Suspect slams door on L.I. officer's finger

Posted: Updated:

WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) - A robbery suspect has been arrested after he allegedly slammed the door on a Long Island police officer's finger.

Nassau County police say the incident occurred Tuesday evening after officers approached a minivan in a Westbury parking lot.

A plainclothes officer opened the driver's side and identified himself.

Police say the driver, Andrew Howard, slammed the door on the officer's finger and began to drive away, striking a police vehicle that had responded to the scene.

A second officer fired one shot, striking the driver in the leg.

Howard was charged with assault, criminal mischief and obstructing government administration. He was treated for his injury.

It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.

The officer suffered a crushed and fractured finger. He was treated and released.
