LIRR reopens Lindenhurst escalator

Posted: Updated:

LINDENHURST, N.Y. (AP) -- The Long Island Rail Road escalator in Lindenhurst has reopened, six months after an 88-year-old woman died after her clothes got entangled in its treads.

Newsday says the escalator was reopened on Monday after a major overhaul that included replacement and refurbishment of major components.

Sensors also were installed every 10 feet. When they detect something caught in the machinery, the system is shut down.

Irene Bernatzky, of Lindenhurst, died March 13 at the rail station.

The accident resulted in the LIRR reviewing all 19 of its escalators. Eleven were taken out of service for several weeks and six remain out of service. They are expected to be back in service in November.
