A car turned into the path of a New York State Police cruiser, causing a violent crash that killed an elderly woman, police said.

The accident happened on State Route 17A in Goshen on Friday, September 14, 2012, authorities said.

The police cruiser was traveling southbound on 17A when a 2012 Kia traveling northbound turned left right and failed to yield to the police car, State Police said.

The cruiser smashed into the Kia and pushed it off the road, police said.

The driver of the Kia, Robert Palladino, 70, of New Hampton, N.Y., was taken to Westchester Medical Center and treated for head trauma, but his wife, Josephine Palladino, 71, who was in the passenger seat, was killed in the crash, police said.

Trooper Scott Baumam, 33, who was at the wheel of the police cruiser, suffered a broken ankle, police said.

Authorities are investigating.
