7 new West Nile cases confirmed after 1st death

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -

New Jersey health officials are reporting seven new cases of West Nile virus, but no additional fatalities since the first death was confirmed a week ago.

Twenty-two cases have now been reported in 15 counties. Essex and Ocean counties report the highest total, with 3 cases each.

A 77-year-old Willingboro man has been the only New Jerseyan to succumb so far.

His death was the first linked to West Nile in New Jersey since 2010.

Symptoms can include headache, tiredness and fever.

Epidemiologists say the mosquito-borne virus has been particularly deadly in other parts of the country this year.

Last year, there were seven confirmed cases in the state but no deaths. In 2010, there were 30 cases, including two deaths.

Cases typically peak in late summer or early fall.
