A 70-year-old woman whose body was found in her home that was set ablaze Friday, was killed has and her death has been ruled a homicide.

Bergen County officials say Barbara Vernieri died of blunt force trauma to the head and upper extremities. Vernieri was found a short time after police and firefighters arrived at her East Rutherford home around 12:30 p.m.

Prosecutor John Molinelli said on Sunday that Vernieri suffered the injuries before the fire to her home. Molinelli said although she may have inhaled carbon monoxide, the damage to her head was the main cause of death.

Investigators have not been able to connect Vernieri's murder to two other unsolved homicides of older women found dead after their homes. There homes were set on fire in Palisades Park and Teaneck in 2010.
