State Police in Delaware have arrested a man who stole his own truck with a front end loader from a business that was repairing the vehicle.
Police were called out to the Stop-N-Go on Christiana Road in New Castle for a reported auto theft. The owner of the Stop-N-Go was told that part the fencings surrounding the business was torn down. In addition, a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was missing.
Police reviewed surveillance and observed a front end load with fork lifts attached drive along the side of the property. Later in the video, the front end loader is show carrying the truck on its forks.
The owner of Stop-N-Go called to notify the owner, Donald Smith II, of the incident but was unable to reach him and left a voicemail. Smith called back shortly after and told the owner that he got the truck back tonight with the front end loader. Smith had defaulted on payment owed to Stop-N-Go for work on truck and were holding truck until they received payment.
Police received a call during the investigation of a front end loader in a parking lot on the 300 block of South DuPont Highway. Police pursued the front end loader after hearing it went through a wooded area near the parking lot. The front end loader ended up on US 13 traveling southbound and crossed over the center median numerous times. The pursuit went for about 35 minutes before the vehicle went into a corn field where troopers stopped the chase. Police set up a perimeter around the field and found the loader disabled in a retention pond.
Smith was able to swim to shore and was taken into custody without further incident. He was released on $5,750 bond. Among Smith's charges are Theft of Services under $1,500, two counts of Criminal Mischief, Driving While Suspended, second degree Criminal Trespass, and numerous driving violations.
