David Albert Mitchell, the suspect accused of raping a woman in Central Park, suffers from a split-personality disorder that is responsible for his vicious attacks on elderly women, his brother told New York Post Saturday.

The 42-year-old suspect apparently has a track record of allegedly raping, beating and robbing elderly women from West Virginia to New York City.

Joseph Mitchell says David's alter ego named "Johnny" is the cause for the crimes.

According to his brother, Mitchell was diagnosed with the split-personality when he was 14 years old and got worse in his 20's. The suspect's brother said the alter-ego attacked him when he was 22 years old, breaking his back with a brick.

He said that was the first time he met "Johnny" and that he hasn't seen him since.

Mitchell said that his mother also suffered from split-personality disorder.

Mitchell was released from prison last year for the 2003 abduction of an ex-girlfriend in Virginia. He has twice been arrested for raping elderly women in his hometown.

The suspect was acquitted at trial in the first case and pleaded guilty to a robbery charge to settle the second.
