Elderly woman infected with West Nile virus in Brooklyn

A 72-year-old woman has been infected with the West Nile virus.
Virginia DiCosmo of Bensonhurst went to the hospital on September 11 with encephalitis, according to her daughter Carol DiCosmo.
Carol DiCosmo called 311 and was told that her mother's block on West 44th Street was sprayed for mosquitoes on September 6 but apparently it was already too late.
DiCosmo's daughter said her mother may be discharged later this week, but to a rehab facility.

Five people were injured when a van jumped a curb in downtown Brooklyn on Friday. The van rear-ended a Taxi and Limousine Commission vehicle at the corner of Church Ave. and Utica Ave. at about 7:45 a.m., said police. One of the pedestrians that was struck by the van was taken to Brookdale Hospital. Four other victims were taken to Kings County Hospital.
