New details in fatal NJ Pathmark shooting

Prosecutors say a Pathmark supermarket employee who shot and killed two co-workers before turning the gun on himself did not argue with or speak to any colleagues before he initially left the NJ store.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced Saturday afternoon that 23-year-old Terence Tyler, a former Marine, was armed with an assault-style rifle and two other weapons when he returned to the Old Bridge Pathmark on August 31.

Kaplan says Tyler legally obtained the weapons while in California but the rifle was illegally modified.

The decision to release more details of the shooting came after weighing the public interest against the privacy rights of the families of the two shooting victims.

Tyler joined the U.S. Marines on March 24, 2008 with a four-year commitment, but was honorably discharged on February 27, 2010, for medical reasons.

He had been stationed in California and remained there after being discharged.

Tyler purchased three weapons: a shotgun, a .45-caliber handgun and a WASR-10, Romanian rifle, similar to an AK-47 assault weapon, between June 2010 and November 2011. The weapons, as sold, were legal in California, but after the purchases, the WASR-10 was modified, rendering it illegal in that state. Tyler also misrepresented certain details in three applications to purchase the guns.

Tyler moved to Old Bridge on June 12, 2012, and brought the weapons with him. The WASR-10 is illegal in New Jersey.
