No Walmart for Brooklyn shopping center, but company persists

Many so-called big box franchises are affiliated with the Gateway Center. But the biggest big box store -- Walmart -- will not be among them.
The company said in statement "We were unable to agree upon economic terms for a project in East New York. We remain committed to bringing new economic development and shopping options to New York City."
Many union-backed groups and some elected officials who don't want Walmart in the city hailed the decision.
But others told Fox 5 that bringing the mega-store into the community would help the surrounding area by creating jobs.
For now, reports indicate a Shoprite will occupy the empty space planned for the second phase of Gateway.
Wal-Mart Inc. insists its fight to enter the five boroughs is not over. The company said: "most New Yorkers want us here and we remain interested in providing more convenient access to Walmart for local residents."
