Ironman triathlon won't return to New York and New Jersey in 2013

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -

Organizers of the Ironman U.S. Championship said Friday the triathlon won't return to the New York area next year, citing the logistical challenges of holding the event on two sides of a river in a dense metropolitan area.

The event was held last month in New York and New Jersey for the first time. The race began with a swim originating on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, continued with a bike ride on the Palisades Parkway and concluded with a marathon run that finished in New York's Riverside Park.

The competition nearly wasn't held due to a sewage leak upriver in Westchester County, but clearance was given the day before the event. A 43-year-old entrant died during the 2.4-mile swim portion of the race.

On Friday the World Triathlon Corporation said a combination of factors including transportation and spectator access led to their decision to cancel next year's event.

"Producing an event in a large urban market is complex and challenging," the statement said. "The combination of the ferries, transition in Palisades Interstate Park, and the difficulty for our spectators to watch much of the inaugural race all combined to create an experience that needed substantial improvement."

Organizers also cited a prohibition on amplified sound after 10 p.m. at the finish line in Riverside Park as detracting from competitors' experience.
