This November, will people care about a phony election scandal?

Posted: Updated:

Rep. Peter Lund is the Republican chairing the GOP effort to hang onto control of the Michigan House so it was only logical to ask him what impact a grand jury investigation might or might not have on the outcome.

Lund adopted the Mad Magazine mantra of Alfred E. Neuman i.e. What?  Me worry?

"None," was the response he gave on the probe into the voting fraud behavior of the top Republican in the House and his side-kick Rep. Roy Schmidt (R-Grand Rapids) The House GOP Speaker Jase Bolger (R-Marshall) and Mr. Schmidt admitted they plotted to conduct a phony election in Schmidt's  district but both have denied any criminal wrong doing.

A one woman-grand jury will try to determine if that is true.

Meanwhile Mr. Lund calls the whole affair "stupid" while admitting he had nothing to do with it, just in case the grand juror wants to chat with him about his role in all this.

Democrats will try to make political hay on this ugly little dalliance by the two Republicans but Mr. Lund tells the Off the Record crew, "I really don't think this will have the impact everybody makes it out to be.  People in my district are not talking about it," he reports from his Macomb County home turf.

Mr. Lund's Democratic counterpart Rep. Jeff Irwin believes the flap will "spill over" into other house races as he describes it as a "big scandal" as he crosses all his fingers and toes hoping he is right.

The GOP campaign chair will not waste a lot of time worrying about this because he believes you lose your "focus on what wins elections" if you do.

He thinks the GOP record to turn the state around is what will cement House control for his side, while the Democrats will point out it was the House Republicans, in lock step with the GOP governor, who cut education and slapped a new pension tax on senior citizens.

Asked if his polling data revealed the pension tax was a liability, Mr. Lund smiled and declined to comment.  On that sticky issue however, he is not Mr. Neuman.  That is something to worry about… big time.
