CARTERET, N.J. (AP) -

Police say a central New Jersey woman was beaten and robbed by a man she met through a friend on Facebook.

Carteret police say the 29-year-old from Paterson was dropped off early Wednesday at a home on Washington Avenue where she was supposed to meet a man named "Steve." The woman told police he called to say he was in the backyard.

Police say the woman was punched in the face and grabbed by the throat when she stepped into the yard.

Her purse was found later on Edgar Street.

Police tell The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick the woman was bleeding from her left ear and her right eye was swollen shut.

She was treated at a hospital and police are looking for a suspect.
