More arrests in LIRR fraud case

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities have arrested about a dozen more people in a long-running investigation of alleged fraud in the Long Island Rail Road's pension system.

FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald confirmed the arrests on Wednesday. Prosecutors had no immediate comment.

Investigators say hundreds of Long Island Rail Road employees may have cheated their way to big pensions through a $1 billion fraud by paying off doctors to say they were unable to work.

They say some supposedly disabled retirees were spotted regularly playing tennis and golf, shoveling heavy snow and working out for hours at a gym.

The LIRR has said a federal agency acted as a rubber stamp without consulting the railroad.
