9/11 anniversary: Santillan family of Parsippany

MYFOXNY.COM -

This September 11, more people were going to work by Ground Zero than attending the memorial ceremony. And the World Trade Center site has actual buildings on it again. Still, the Santillan family from Parsippany, N.J., came, as they have every 9/11 since the attacks, to remember and honor their only daughter, only sister: Maria Theresa Santillan.

Maritess, as her family called her, worked at Cantor Fitzgerald when the planes hit. She was 27 and engaged to be married. Her maid of honor would have been her first cousin Judy Fernandez, who was also 27, also engaged, and also died that day.

Maritess' parents have set up a scholarship at Parsippany High School for someone going into law enforcement or medicine and who volunteers.

Maritess was the oldest of three. Both her younger brothers have since married. Neither of the sisters-in-law ever met Maritess. Middle brother Victor married Talya and has two boys. Xavier is 4. Victor changed jobs from engineer to pharmaceutical salesman.

Youngest brother Ray, with a half dozen friends, did the Tunnel to Towers run to raise money for firefighters. He married Jennifer. She is pregnant and due anytime.
