NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on charges that he abused a 9-year-old girl over several years by beating her and chaining her to a radiator.

Authorities say the girl had run away and police went to the man's house in New Haven to take a missing person's report. Police noticed injuries to the girl's face after she was located with help from the community.

The New Haven Register reported that Craig Tracy Williams was arraigned Monday. He was jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The girl initially said another child beat her up, but she later told authorities that Williams has beaten her for years.

Police said the girl has several scars on her body that support her account of abuse.
