Pink gloves controversy at youth football game

A youth football coach from southern New Jersey apologized to the family of a player who was told to take off the pink gloves he wore in support of his mother who has breast cancer.

12-year-old Julian Connerton spoke with Good Day New York on Wednesday. He said he accepts the coach's apology.

The incident took place in the Egg Harbor City Crusaders Youth Athletic League Association.

Connerton says when he first put the gloves on before a game last weekend, coach Paul Burgan told him to take them off.

A teammate convinced him to put them back on.  When coach Burgan saw them the second time and told him to remove them, Connerton said that if he had to take them off, he wouldn't play.

Connerton took the game off and then told his mom that he didn't want to play for a coach that didn't support him.

Connerton admits that he didn't tell the coach why he was wearing the gloves.

Connerton's mother initially told the media she'd like the coach to be suspended for the season.

The coach came by the family's house on Tuesday and apologized to the boy's mother.  Mayra Cruz-Connerton says she accepted the apology.

"I think that coach Paul learned that when you make a mistake it's ok to step up and say, 'I'm sorry', and he did that and we're happy and appreciate that, she says.

Burgan says he's getting pink socks for the entire team to wear next weekend.

"Me personally, I forgot. It's not that I don't know that pink stands for. I forgot," said Burgan.
